On Aging - (original poem)

On Aging

Somehow I've reached the age where I regret
The follies of my misspent youth, and yet --
I'd be remiss had I missed your kiss,
Feel worse pain in my shoulder
Had I never rolled you over in the clover.

Feeling my creeping age a bit, here, evidently.  Here's the original poem I wrote after receiving happy calls from my mom's Edward Jones advisor (in Mississippi) and my youngest sister, Lou.  Blaming her for my spurt of creativity, I called (catching her at the grocery store in mid-aisle) and read it to her, getting a most approving laugh of surprise.

(She DID NOT ask me if it was from personal experience, LOL!)

Okay, quick, name a body part that rhymes with clover...

I actually considered hiding the couple behind a conveniently placed boulder or making them from Andover, MASSACHUSETTS, a place I've never been, or Dover, England, another location I've never seen.  But all I know about Dover is CLIFFS, [clover does NOT normally grow on a beach, anyway,] and maybe there IS no city park in Andover... :-(

Now, all I have to worry about is WHY making love might make your shoulder hurt... :-(

Sometimes I overthink things, I think.

Rejected versions:

Somehow I've reached the age where I regret
The follies of my misspent youth, and yet --
I'd be remiss had I missed your kiss,
Had I never rolled you over in the clover

in the hollow behind the boulder.

(Hold it, Love - is that a new mole, or a deer tick?)

Somehow I've reached the age where I regret
The follies of my misspent youth, and yet --
I'd be remiss had I missed your kiss,
Had I never rolled you over in the clover
in the city park in dear Andover.

(Don't look, Ethel -- Lewd Nudes alert!)

Somehow I've reached the age where I regret
The follies of my misspent youth, and yet --
I'd be remiss had I missed your kiss,
Had I never rolled you over in the clover

above the white cliffs of Dover.

(Careful, Honey, that's a LONG DROOOOOPPPPP OVER!)
