INT. MOVIE SET - UNIVERSAL LOT - FIRST DAY ON SET
BILLY, a bright young cameraman, corners JEREMIAH about a project he’s had in mind for some time.
Jeremiah, I have a month of unscheduled time blocked out starting today. What do you say if I begin to document your life 24-7? I’ll need to be assured I can have access to everywhere, everything. Here’s the way my assignment is written, and how I propose to meet it. I promise you, I’m good enough, you won’t regret it.
Jeremiah glances casually at the paper and permission form, then borrows a pen and signs.
My love life might. That’s pretty impressive. The documentary would be viewed nation-wide, probably worldwide. You’d no longer be just a Hollywood and Southern California phenomenon. Oh, don’t look at me like that. I was once struggling for a toehold in this industry, too. Here’s your permission to film form.
Billy files the permit, wry grin still in place.
You’ll have to get forms from my friends and dates separately. Start with Obie, as she’s wandering around here somewhere, and I definitely will be interacting with her.
Jeremiah turns away, then turns back.
Oh, and Billy, if you ever hear Obie go off on one of her soliloquies, film it, no matter what I’m up to, POV my eyes. Rest assured, I’ll be raptly listening.
INT. MOVIE SET - UNIVERSAL LOT
BILLY is talking to HARRY, one of the producers, and ROBBIE, the director. He is not part of the normal cameramen, but a utility shooter who basically picks his own projects, selling them wherever he sees an opportunity. Newsrooms to newsreels fight for his footage.
You’re the designated utility camera. When we’re out here, keep your ear on OBIE. If she starts spouting one of her spontaneous lectures, get it, unless you have a scripted or specific cue in from the B unit director that overrides it.
Even if she’s behind the scenes?
Especially if she’s behind the scenes. She’s not an actress. She’s a wannabe scriptwriter who excels at novels. Put her deliberately on camera, and she chokes. If you can angle the shot so that she appears to be in the set, that’s a bonus.
Last updated: 11/29/09 Reversed be just a; Changed sentence start/end to, POV my eyes. Rest; 11/28/09 Changed last two speeches to ROBBIE to match the rest of the script. 9/19/09 Changed last two speeches from HF to RR. A producer would not be in charge of camera direction -- that's the director's job.
