And So It Goes

One of the results of the Simon and Garfunkel class I took this summer was that the teacher lent me two compilation disks, one of Billy Joel's works, which I only knew from a version of one of his by the King Singers that I'd fallen in love with, and one of Bob Dylan's. I love a LOT of his work, but generally sung by SOMEONE ELSE.

I like Billy Joel far more than I expected to. Other than dropping the last consonants at times, especially the end of lines, he's very nice.

Instead of the one I'd first wanted to hear his version of, I've found, after nearly a month of using these two as background music, my favorite is And So It Goes.

Many of the Bob Dylan singing himself songs BOTHER ME. (He puts the end consonants in, but he doesn't carry his tune faithfully, and frequently uses a very unattractive voice sound. I'd read in a Joan Baez biography that he could sing "pretty", but it wasn't until I got confused one day as he did Lay, Lady, Lay that I accepted this as true. His voice on that piece is FINE. Soooo.... how come he absolutely ruins HIS OWN compositions of Forever Young,

So, the one I fixated on for today is And So It Goes, and since I've been composing in Word, I get "free" comments on grammar (but based on a formal business, good-impression-on-the-client mode, not creative fiction mode), and spell check. Since I am a reading teacher, I sometimes need to find the level of a passage or book, so my computers are set to automatically add the word count, and reading level information together in the same dialog box. WHAT AN EYE OPENER on this song:

In every heart there is a room,
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lover’s past,
Until a new one comes along.

I spoke to you in cautious tones;
You answered me with no pretense,
And still I feel I said too much;
My silence is my self defense.

And every time I’ve held a rose,
It seems I only felt the thorns;
And so it goes, and so it goes,
And so will you soon. I suppose.

But if my silence made you leave,
Then that would be my worst mistake;
So I will share this room with you,
And you can have this heart to break.

And this is why my eyes are closed;
It’s just as well for all I’ve seen;
And so it goes, and so it goes,
And you’re the only one who knows.

So I would choose to be with you,
That’s if the choice were mine to make,
But you can make decisions, too,
And you can have this heart to break.

And so it goes, and so it goes,
And you’re the only one who knows.

Reading Level: .7

(So, a bright kindergartener, and most first graders by the end of the year could read this? Okay, if read = pronounce properly, or decode properly. But with understanding??? I don’t EVEN want to think about the lives of children that young who could do that!)
