Nora Roberts, in The Law Is a Lady, has the sheriff arrest a man who refuses to pay a speeding ticket. When he objects, she puts him in jail, at gunpoint, when he resists the idea. Ah, the inception of TRUE LOVE.
Later on, when the plot requires a "working lunch" be held at suppertime, in his hotel room, (which is doubling for his office, of course) he says, "Sheriff,"...with a quick grin, "leave the gun in the desk, okay? It'll kill my appetite." (p.83)
