In an article on speech problems and the danger of ignoring them in the mistaken belief that a child with early language problems may be "the strong, silent type", Gary Fowlie (1996) made this stark observation:

I do know that Johnny's going to need all of his strength to survive in a school system where the best indicator of his academic success at 18 is how good his language skills are when he walks in the door at age 5.
