What kind of band geek are you?
When I was in fifth grade, the students who wanted to join band started. I asked if I could play the piano, so dad lent me his lovely silver trumpet...
Which I had absolutely NO desire to learn to play... He played it marvelously. But GIRLS at that time did NOT play trumpets. Coronets were the in things. I did not need something to make me feel more out of it. I was already the second tallest person in my grade (the teacher was taller...)
When we moved to Rochester, Minnesota, into a BIG high school, there were tryouts for band. You didn't just show up with an inherited instrument. It took this director about five seconds to get my drift, even though I could not articulate the trouble. I think the age of that lovely, lovely old horn said it all. (A trumpet really IS a lot sexier looking than a coronet... especially in silver.)
His parting words were, "It's like chocolate ice cream. You either like it, or you don't."
So, I'm a band GROUPIE... Sigh.
